Eleanor’s Mastectomy Repair

Eleanor’s Mastectomy Repair

Name: Eleanor
City: San Diego
Country: USA
Age: 54

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer when I was 51 years old. I was told that the only option open to me was a mastectomy, due to the location of the tumor, deep in my very large breast. I was of course devastated and frightened at first, but within a few days I had come to terms with it and was ready to fight! I ended up having both breasts removed, eventually. First I was told a mastectomy on the cancer breast and a breast reduction on the other breast was the way to go. I wish I had not done that because I ended up having so much trouble with the reduction (nipple hypersensitivity and asymmetry) that I ended up having another mastectomy and the incision was made vertically because of the existing scar from the breast reduction operation.

During the tissue expansion procedure (I have implants), the incision scar stretched wider and wider and had to be revised. It's a much more unattractive scar than the original mastectomy and I would definitely recommend to anyone who does not plan to breast feed, to have both breasts taken at once. I also had do go through chemo therapy and am now on a drug called Tamoxifen. I don't like the drugs but I realize that they are effective and that this won't last forever.

I am so very grateful to be alive today and to have gone through this life altering experience. It really has changed me forever and for the good!
