Underarm
incision
placement is a good option for women who do not want to chance the areolar or inframammary
scarring
associated with surgical wounds which are placed on the actual breast. The underarm contains natural creases and folds which are suitable for completely concealing a small incision and at least camouflaging a larger incision. The size and length of the incision required will depend on the
size
and type of
breast implants
selected by the patient.
Saline implants
require a very short surgical wound since they are placed in the body unfilled and folded to fit through the smallest of openings.
Silicone breast implants
and
cohesive silicone gel implants
require a sizably larger and longer incision, since they are pre-filled by the
manufacturer.
Particularly large sized silicone implants will require a long incision which will often be more noticeable post-operatively.
Transumbilical breast enlargement
has the distinction of being the best procedure to hide any surgical scar. However, this method can only be accomplished using saline implants. The other 2 surgical approaches,
periareolar
and
inframammary,
cut into the actual breast, risking visible scarring as well as potential complications which can affect
breast sensitivity
and the ability to
breastfeed.
Transaxillary breast augmentation does not cut into the breast, greatly minimizing these surgical
complications
while simultaneously leaving no scar formation in a visible location. This makes the procedure an excellent choice for women who desire silicone implants and also want to minimize scarring.
