Breast Implant Wrinkling
Breast implant wrinkling is an unaesthetic side effect of certain implant styles, fill levels and anatomical
placements.
Implant rippling which can be visualized through the skin creates a strange unnatural appearance which is disturbing to many affected women. Luckily, wrinkling can be prevented with some careful surgical planning and wise decision making. Wrinkling is also commonly called implant distortion or implant creasing.
What is Breast Implant Wrinkling?
Implant rippling or wrinkling is when a patterned set of lines is visible through the breast skin. These creases, folds or wrinkles in the implant will cause a noticeable impression on the skin which is usually more visible in certain positions. Implant rippling is typically most apparent when the women is leaning forward or lying on her back. The wrinkles may be a minor cosmetic issue or might completely change the entire look of the
breast mound.
Severe implant wrinkling can be a major disappointment for affected women and is also a prime reason to undergo revision surgery.
Causes of Breast Implant Rippling
Saline breast implants
ripple far more often than
silicone breast implant
styles.
Subglandular
placement usually makes wrinkling far more noticeable than
submuscular
or
subpectoral
placement. The fill level of the implant can also cause or prevent rippling in the prosthesis shell.
Overfilling
might cause wrinkling is rare circumstances, but
underfilling
is a primary cause of the condition. Implant style is a contributor to experiencing any noticeable rippling.
High profile
designs are known to wrinkle less often and
cohesive silicone gel implants
will not wrinkle at all.
Recommendation on Breast Implant Wrinkling
This is a concern which is often completely unknown to most women prior to surgery. However, many men are familiar with this problem since it common to see on the
breasts
of many augmented exotic entertainers and adult video stars. Implant wrinkling is rarely discussed until it is experienced…at which time it is too late. Make sure to ask your
cosmetic surgeon
about the risk of experiencing implant wrinkling from your chosen procedure. In addition, ask what measures might be used to prevent this unwanted event from occurring. If you have visible wrinkling already from your
breast augmentation
procedure, you might consider a
revision
surgery to correct the issues causing the visual deformity. Implant revision can be done by switching implant styles, materials or placement and is often very successful at resolving wrinkling issues. For more information about preventing rippling or resolving wrinkling concerns, consult a qualified
plastic surgeon
near you.
