Breast Reduction Procedures
Breast reduction procedures vary according to the extent of
breast tissue
which needs to be removed and the amount of
ptosis
experienced in the breasts. Surgical
breast reduction
is a great treatment modality for women who suffer from extensive physical and emotional problems due to their overly large and unmanageable
breasts.

Techniques of Breast Reduction Procedures
The primary purpose of
reduction mammoplasty
is to lessen breast weight, bulk and size by removing excess tissue (often mostly
fat
) on the interior of the breast. The secondary purpose is to excise stretched out skin, bringing the breast to a higher anatomical position on the chest wall, as well as firming and toning the remaining breast tissue. The final purpose of the reduction procedure is to move the
nipple
and
areola
to a higher and more youthful position on the newly created breast mound, giving the breast a more pleasant aesthetic quality.
Types of Breast Reduction Procedures
Almost all
breast reduction surgeries
are very invasive, but there are some options which are less complicated than others and still produce excellent results. The right procedure for your situation will be determined by your
cosmetic surgeon
prior to the actual operation being performed. The most common types of breast reduction include:
* Full breast reduction
involves the use of an
anchor incision
to access the interior of the breast in the vertical, horizontal and periareolar planes. This procedure is the most invasive and will leave the most post-operative
scarring.
Other common names for this technique include the
Wise pattern
(or Weiss pattern),
inferior pedicle
technique or keyhole pattern.
* Vertical scar breast reduction
is a less invasive option which utilizes a
periareolar
and vertical incision, but does not disturb the horizontal plane of the breast mound. This technique offers generally better post-operative shape and less scarring for women whose breasts are indicated for the procedure. This surgical technique is also commonly called lollipop breast reduction, vertical breast reduction, and SPAIR technique.
* Liposuction Breast Reduction
is the least invasive of all reduction techniques. This procedure is less effective than full breast reduction surgeries, but is a perfect option for some women with less ptosis and minimal reduction needs. Liposuction is also a good follow up procedure for post-reduction or
post-mastopexy
patients who have experienced considerable re-growth of fatty breast tissue.
Recommendation on Breast Reduction Procedures
Although breast reduction is a very invasive surgery, it is well worth the pain and expense for most patients. Women who suffer everyday with the physical and emotional effects of mammoth breasts truly benefit greatly from this life changing operation. It is no surprise that the post-operative satisfaction rating for this procedure ranks amongst the highest in the entire
plastic surgery
industry. Learning the facts about the operation is the first step in planning a successful procedure.
Choosing your doctor
is the next most important step. Finally, making sure you have done everything possible to ensure a good surgical result by increasing your overall health prior to the operation, will almost guarantee a positive outcome. To learn more about breast reduction surgery, consult a qualified
