What is Transaxillary Breast Augmentation? This surgical procedure uses an incision placed in a natural fold of the underarm to gain entrance to the inside of the breast. The area containing the surgical wound is not usually exposed, so the scar will be well hidden except under close examination. A well placed scar will not look obvious even if viewed directly, since it is often mistaken for an organic fold in the skin. This procedure is preferred by many doctors and patients alike, since it does not scar the breast, nor create the potential for many of the usual incision related complications.
Placing breast implants through the armpit is a procedure which takes some time and patience, as well as specific anatomical knowledge of the axillary region. After marking the patient with a surgical pen to outline the position of the new implants, the surgeon will anesthetize the patient in a supine position. Small incisions will be placed in the underarm through which the implants will be inserted. Tiny incisions are required for
saline breast implants
because these are placed into the body folded and unfilled.
Silicone implants
require a larger incision since these come pre-filled from the
manufacturer.
The surgeon will typically use blunt dissection to create a pocket in which the implant will be positioned. This pocket can be made in the
subglandular
plane, the
submuscular
plane or the
subpectoral
plane.
Subfascial
positioning is another option for women who will benefit from placement under the fascia, but in front of the muscle. Many doctors utilize an
endoscope
during this procedure to help visualize the approach and interior of the breast pocket. Once the implant has been positioned, the surgical wound is closed, with extra special care taken to avoid a noticeable scar in the skin.
Transaxillary Breast Enlargement AdviceTransaxillary procedures are a fantastic option for women who are trying to avoid noticeable scarring. The TUBA procedure is the best method of preventing a visible scar, but is only available using saline implants. Transaxillary implantation can be accomplished using silicone prostheses, which makes it the perfect method for women who choose silicone, but do not want to risk scarring associated with periareolar or inframammary incisions. Talk to your cosmetic surgeon to find out if transaxillary breast implant placement is the right option for your particular body type and expectations.Transaxillary Breast Augmentation to Breast Surgery 11/20/07 Revised 6/3/11 |
